WFMD Event: Hutovo Blato Day
Chandal Menard, WWF Mediterranean Programme (Barcelona)
World Fish Migration Day was organised in Bosnia and Herzegovina on the occasion of Hutovo Blato Day, a Nature Park and wetland of international importance in the country.
On the occasion of a conference where government people were present, the issue of fish migration in the Neretva and Trebišnjica basins was explained by leading ichthyologists in the region. They gave a presentation on the current issues and threats that fish population are faced with, especially in the case of the endemic species (9 in the Neretva basin) which are mostly migratory. They are under high`pressure due to the fragmentation of the Neretva river where hydropower dams have been built, while the ones living in Hutovo Blato face the threat of lowering water levels.
An art colony was also organised on the theme of fish and birds and you can find some of the masterpieces attached.
